Family Balancing

Family balancing, or gender selection, is an option with IVF

There are many reasons why couples would consider sex selection when thinking about a family. At Fertility Specialists of Texas, we have been a leader in family balancing with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). We can assure that if you conceive, the proper gender will be born with a high degree of accuracy. Many couples may want to use gender selection to prevent transmitting one of the more than 500+ gender-linked genetic diseases to their child.

Sex selection for family balancing allows families to choose to have a boy or girl before becoming pregnant. This option allows families to “balance” the number of girls or boys they have in their family. Couples often choose family balancing for personal or cultural reasons.

How gender selection works

Our team performs gender selection using preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). During the laboratory process of PGS, embryos that are created in an IVF cycle undergo a cell biopsy on days 5 and 6 of development and cells are sent to a genetics laboratory to examine the two sex chromosomes (X & Y) to determine the gender (male or female) of each embryo. We freeze embryos after the biopsy procedure. Our doctors then only transfer embryos of the preferred gender into the woman’s uterus in a subsequent frozen embryo transfer cycle.
