Donor Sperm IUI

Donor sperm IUI makes parenthood possible for many groups of patients

Fertility Specialists of Texas offers many different fertility treatments that utilize third party reproduction. Donor sperm IUI, or donor sperm insemination, is one of the most popular of these options. Our Dallas-Fort Worth fertility doctors recommend this family-building option to patients who range from single women to couples facing male infertility.

How does donor sperm IUI work?

Intrauterine insemination, or artificial insemination is a basic, first-line fertility treatment. It involves using a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) to place sperm into a woman’s uterus when she is ovulating. Doing so improves the likelihood that one of the sperm will reach the ovulated egg in the fallopian tube and fertilize it. From there, the fertilized egg should move into the uterus. There, it should implant into the uterine lining (endometrium) and develop into a healthy embryo.

Patients will often use sperm from their partner when pursuing IUI with our Dallas-Fort Worth fertility doctors. However, other patients may need to rely on sperm from a donor. In this case, the first step is selecting a sperm donor. This man can be someone the patient knows or an anonymous donor from a sperm bank.

After selecting the donor, the patient will move forward with donor sperm IUI, which will be the same as it would be for a patient using sperm from a male partner.

Who is a candidate for this treatment?

Several groups of patients can benefit from donor sperm insemination. Generally, our Dallas-Fort Worth fertility doctors recommend donor sperm insemination for the following groups of patients.

  • Lesbian couples who want to have a biological child
  • Single women who want to have a baby
  • Couples facing male infertility

Because IUI is a basic fertility treatment, it works best for women who ovulate regularly or respond well to ovulation induction medications. The woman who will undergo the insemination procedure should also have open fallopian tubes and no other major fertility issues. If a woman is facing more significant reproductive roadblocks, our team may recommend IVF with donor sperm instead.
