The Types of Women Who Make Good IVF Candidates

Female fertility is complex. For a woman to conceive naturally, she needs to have enough high-quality eggs. She also needs open fallopian tubes and a uterus that can support a pregnancy. Additionally, her levels of reproductive hormones, such as anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), need to fall in certain ranges.

If a woman has issues in one or more of these areas, fertility treatments can help her conceive. In the case of in vitro fertilization, our Dallas-Fort Worth infertility specialists find that the following types of women are good IVF candidates.

• If a woman has a tubal obstruction, the sperm and the egg cannot meet in the fallopian tube. IVF allows our team to bypass the tube, which can help make pregnancy possible.

• For a woman over 35, IVF is often the quickest route to pregnancy. Additionally, it allows our team to help a woman conceive using donor eggs if needed.

• If a woman has unexplained infertility or has had multiple miscarriages or failed IUI cycles, in vitro fertilization is often a good option to help her conceive.

The Types of Men Who Make Good Candidates for This Treatment

In vitro fertilization can also help men overcome several different obstacles to biological fatherhood.

When a man has a very low sperm count, IVF can make fertilization easier. The embryologists in the lab place sperm with the egg in a petri dish. As a result, the sperm doesn’t need to swim through the cervix, uterus, and into the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg. During the cycle, embryologists can also perform intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to inject a single sperm directly into an egg.

Gay couples and single men who are using egg donation and gestational surrogacy to conceive are also good IVF candidates.
