What Are the Steps to Treat a Low Sperm Count?

Our Dallas-Fort Worth infertility center knows it’s important to understand the full picture before recommending any treatment. A semen analysis can tell us whether your count is high, normal, or low. However, it can’t pinpoint why. That’s why we’ll perform additional testing if your semen analysis shows a low sperm count.

First, we’ll order a second semen analysis to confirm the results. Sperm count can vary based on different factors, including how recently you’ve ejaculated, so it’s important to double-check the result.

If the results of the analysis still show a low count, we may make a referral to a local urologist. This is a special type of doctor that focuses on diagnosing and treating issues in the male urinary and reproductive tracts. Your urologist can perform testing to determine which of the following issues could be causing you to have a low sperm count.

• Surgeries, infections, and injuries to the pelvic area.
• Certain health issues like diabetes and retrograde ejaculation.
• Genetic conditions that affect sperm production.
• Certain cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.
• Structural problems with the penis or the testicles.
• The use of medications for low T.
• Hormonal imbalances.
• A previous vasectomy.
• Lifestyle issues ranging from obesity to cigarette smoking.

What Are the Treatment Options for This Male Fertility Issue?

Each patient who visits our Dallas-Fort Worth infertility center receives a customized treatment plan. That’s because each patient has a unique diagnosis and health history as well as their own budget and family-building goals.

However, our doctors may recommend intrauterine insemination (IUI) in cases of mild male infertility. In other cases, our team will likely recommend in vitro fertilization (IVF). Often, we will suggest that patients combine IVF with a lab procedure called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). With ICSI, embryologists inject a single healthy sperm into an egg, which increases the likelihood of fertilization and pregnancy.
