Understanding Recurrent Pregnancy Loss and Fertility

Recurrent pregnancy loss is often misunderstood. These deeply personal losses may be rooted in physical, genetic, or hormonal factors that silently interfere with conception or interrupt early embryo development. Understanding them is the first step in finding answers—and hope.

  • Genetic abnormalities – Sometimes, the building blocks of life don’t align as they should. An embryo may carry changes in chromosome number or structure, making it impossible for a pregnancy to continue—through no fault of your own.
  • Uterine or anatomical differences – Fibroids, polyps, or the shape of the uterus itself can quietly block implantation or disrupt the nurturing environment needed for pregnancy to thrive.
  • Medical conditions – Chronic health issues like thyroid imbalances, autoimmune disorders, or uncontrolled diabetes can impact the delicate balance your body needs to support a pregnancy.
  • Lifestyle factors – Choices and circumstances—like smoking, substance use, or weight-related hormonal shifts—can also play a role, and sometimes the path to healing begins with small, supportive changes.

In some cases, no clear cause is identified—what we call “unexplained” RPL. Even then, it’s important to understand that these losses are often connected to treatable fertility challenges. In many cases, there is a path forward.

How We Help: Thoughtful Diagnosis and Personalized Treatment

We understand how overwhelming it can feel to face loss without answers. That’s why our approach to recurrent pregnancy loss is both comprehensive and compassionate—designed to uncover the “why” behind your experience and guide you toward a path forward with hope.

Every evaluation is tailored to you and your specific situation, and may include:

  • Transvaginal ultrasound or saline sonogram (SIS) to gently assess the shape of the uterus and identify anything that might interfere with implantation, such as fibroids, polyps, or adhesions.
  • Hormone and ovarian reserve testing, including AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone), to gain insight into your hormone levels and egg supply—an important piece of the fertility picture.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to visualize the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, helping us detect blockages or abnormalities that could be impacting a successful pregnancy.
  • Genetic testing for both partners and, when possible, testing of pregnancy tissue, to identify hidden chromosomal or inherited conditions that might affect embryo development.

With these insights, we create a care plan that’s as personal as your story. Treatment may involve minimally invasive surgery to correct physical barriers, IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to select embryos with the best chance of success, or targeted medical therapies that bring your body into balance.

Through it all, you’ll have a team that sees you, supports you, and believes in your future.
