When Should I See a Fertility Specialist?
Deciding when to see a fertility specialist is a significant step toward building your family. At Fertility Specialists of Texas (FST), we know that everyone we see has a unique story to them, and we’re here to make your experience supportive, clear, and encouraging from the start.
Request AppointmentKnowing When It’s Time for Help
The path to pregnancy varies, but our specialists offer clear guidelines, established by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), to help you determine the best time to seek support. It’s a good idea to meet with one of our experienced fertility doctors if you fall into one of these categories:
- You’re under 35 and have been trying for one year
- You’re over 35 and have been trying for six months.
- You’re over 40 and have been trying for three months.
- You are a single person or in a same sex relationship.
More than age and time trying to conceive factors into your fertility chances. If you’ve had multiple miscarriages, you would benefit from a fertility consultation, regardless of age or time trying. You should also consider booking if you or your partner has a known fertility issue, like low sperm or egg count, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), endometriosis, or uterine fibroids.
If there’s a family history of infertility or genetic conditions you’d prefer to avoid passing to your child, that’s another reason to prioritize seeing a fertility specialist.
Preparing for Your Consultation
Your first appointment with our fertility clinic is designed to feel comfortable, thorough, and informative. To help us provide personalized care from the start, please submit the following information prior to your visit:
- Medical records of previous infertility treatments, lab studies, ultrasounds, or IVF cycles.
- Gynecological surgical reports, if applicable.
- Results from your most recent Pap smear.
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) films and partner’s semen analysis results.
- Any relevant male surgical records and pathology reports.
Transferring these records is easy. Fill out our medical records release form, and we’ll handle the rest.
Medical Records Release FormWhat to Expect at Your First Visit
Please arrive about 15 minutes early with your completed paperwork, driver’s license, and insurance cards. Our welcoming staff will guide you smoothly through check-in. We encourage both partners (if applicable) to attend this consultation for the fullest understanding of your care.
Your fertility doctor will review your health history, discuss your previous records, and explore treatment possibilities tailored specifically to you. You’ll then connect with your personal treatment coordinator who arranges any needed testing and clearly explains your next steps.
Your coordinator remains your go-to resource throughout your entire care experience. If structural issues are identified through testing, they can walk you through options that could enhance your chances of pregnancy, like fertility surgery.
Fertility Second Opinion
If you’ve previously consulted another reproductive endocrinologist within the past three months, our fertility center is pleased to offer a complimentary second opinion consultation. The consultation lasts approximately 15 minutes and focuses on discussing your diagnosis and exams, testing, and treatment strategy moving forward.
Please submit your medical records beforehand for the best guidance.
