Growing Your Family

At Fertility Specialists of Texas we are passionate about what we do, how we do it and why. We firmly believe the only true measure of success is the birth of a healthy baby, which is why we explore every option and opportunity to help make that happen as effectively, efficiently and affordably as possible.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) literally means “fertilization in glass”. The multi-step process begins with ovulation induction. Medications are used to develop and mature multiple follicles in preparation for the egg retrieval.

During an egg retrieval, performed under light sedation, follicular fluid is removed from the ovaries and examined in our IVF lab for the presence of eggs. These eggs are isolated and placed in culture media where they continue the maturation process. A few hours later, the eggs are fertilized using Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). ICSI involves the placement of a single sperm directly into the egg using a microscopic pipette.

The eggs, which develop into embryos, are cultured to day 5 or 6 and frozen via vitrification, a rapid-cooling technique. If genetic testing is requested, an embryo biopsy is performed just prior to freezing. Genetic testing results are usually available 5-7 business days following biopsy.

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

Prior to a frozen embryo transfer, the uterus is prepared for conception with estrogen and progesterone. On the day of transfer, the embryo with the highest pregnancy potential is thawed and placed in the uterine cavity.

Two weeks following the FET a blood test is performed to determine pregnancy; positive tests are repeated two days later, and a sonogram is scheduled. Once a heartbeat is confirmed via sonogram, usually around eight weeks, you will be released into the care of your OB/GYN for the duration of your pregnancy.

Using an Egg Donor

The in-house egg donor program at Fertility Specialists of Texas provides an ever-growing pool of candidates from which to choose. Our dedicated recruitment team is committed to connecting with, screening and approving top-tier candidates who exemplify health, intelligence, empathy and compassion. Our internal donors are available exclusively for patients at Fertility Specialists of Texas. If we do not have a donor who matches your criteria, we have a network of exemplary agencies that can assist you in your search for the optimal egg donor for your family.

Using a Gestational Carrier (GC)

Fertility Specialists of Texas has established relationships with many of the country’s most highly regarded surrogacy agencies. The agency conducts the initial recruitment and screening of potential surrogates, provides legal referrals and offers administrative assistance throughout the entire process, beginning through birth. A potential carrier must be a mom who has had a healthy pregnancy and delivery and must meet additional medical and psychological criteria before she can be matched.

Once the agency has matched you with a gestational carrier and all contracts have been signed, and the legal agreement is in place, medical treatment begins. Prior to the birth of your baby, the surrogacy attorney files a declaration with the State Courts defining that the legal parents are the biological or intended parents and not the gestational carrier.

Preparing for Your In-Office Consultation

Traveling to another country for fertility treatment can seem overwhelming to even the most seasoned wayfarer. The best way to counteract the stress is to know before you go. We’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your appointment with Fertility Specialists of Texas.

You will receive an email from one of our new patient coordinators with instructions for completing your patient portal. Completion of the patient portal is vital to the success of your first appointment as it provides your fertility specialist with basic background information and a detailed medical history.

You will also be asked to provide your insurance card and previous medical records.

No pre-testing is required; however, any of the following tests that are completed within proximity to your appointment will provide beneficial information for your fertility specialist:

  • Female patient: vaginal ultrasound (schedule day 2, 3 or 4 of your period)
  • Female patient: lab work: FSH, E2, LH, Prolactin, TSH, AMH, Vitamin D
  • Male patient: recent semen analysis

For female patients, you may need an ultrasound and/or lab work; this will be based on your medical history and whether you completed any of the tests mentioned above. Male patients may need recommended lab work and will be asked to provide a specimen sample to eliminate the need for a second visit to our center and any recommended blood work.

After your consultation with your fertility specialist, you will meet with a member of our financial counseling team. The exact cost for your treatment cycle will be calculated upon review of your insurance coverage. Payments, discounts and financing options will be covered, as well. We provide transparent pricing and want to ensure you are comfortable with the investment and timeline associated with your treatment.

For individuals and couples not using a gestational carrier and/or egg donor, treatment can typically begin withing one to two cycles once testing is complete and a treatment plan is in place.

For individuals and couples using a gestational carrier and/or egg donor, treatment plans vary based on the selection of an egg donor and/or being matched with a surrogate. Our third-party department does everything they can to expedite the process as quickly as possible.

IVF patients may choose to have monitoring done at a fertility center closer to their home. Monitoring typically includes an ultrasound and blood work every other day for 10-14 days. Egg retrievals and embryo transfers will be performed in our Frisco, Texas office, where our IVF lab is located.

Your egg retrieval and embryo transfer will be performed by one of our fertility specialists, typically your specific physician. All other monitoring appointments may be completed by a member of your physician’s clinical care team.

For patients not using a gestational carrier and/or egg donor, your physician’s nurse will be your main point of contact for medical questions. Using your patient portal will be the fastest, most efficient way to communicate.

For patients using a gestational carrier and/or egg donor, our dedicated third-party team will be available to guide you through every step of your treatment. They will provide you with their direct contact information during your initial visit.
