Female Fertility Bloodwork

Female fertility bloodwork can help with diagnosing and treating infertility

The team at Fertility Specialists of Texas believes that the best treatment plan starts with an accurate diagnosis. That’s why our Dallas-Fort Worth fertility specialists will likely order female fertility bloodwork as a part of your diagnostic testing. Learning more about your levels of different reproductive hormones is often the first step on your path to parenthood.

What does female fertility bloodwork assess?

When it comes to our patients, our doctors design customized treatment plans and order personalized diagnostic testing. This is because every patient is different. Our Dallas-Fort Worth fertility specialists order bloodwork based on a patient’s symptoms, diagnosis and needs.

Below, you will find a quick guide to some types of female fertility bloodwork.

Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) comes from your egg-containing ovarian follicles. It provides information about your ovarian reserve (egg supply). A higher AMH indicates a good ovarian reserve.

Estradiol is the main type of estrogen that your ovaries produce. This hormone helps with thickening the uterine lining and triggering ovulation. A high estradiol level suggests a diminished ovarian reserve.

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) comes from your pituitary gland in your brain. It encourages the growth of ovarian follicles. Higher FSH levels suggest a diminished ovarian reserve.

Progesterone is a reproductive hormone that helps prepare the uterine lining for embryo implantation. Including progesterone as part of female fertility bloodwork provides information about ovulation and the health of a current pregnancy.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is another hormone that comes from the pituitary gland. Having a TSH level that is too high or too low can cause fertility issues.

Does timing matter when testing reproductive hormones?

We will order bloodwork to test hormones like estradiol and FSH at the beginning of your cycle. However, some reproductive hormones like TSH don’t fluctuate throughout the month. As a result, we can test them at any time. Our Dallas-Fort Worth fertility specialists can answer your questions about when you should come in for bloodwork.
