What is an Infertility Specialist?

An "Infertility Specialist" is an ob/gyn doctor who has undergone two-three years of additional training in Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility. While most gynecologists are able to perform basic fertility evaluations and may offer some first level forms of treatment, infertility is not the primary focus of their practice. It is important to make sure you are seeing a board certified reproductive endocrinologist. Studies indicate that treatment by a fertility specialist is more cost effective and more likely to result in a pregnancy.

Reproductive Endocrinologists (infertility specialists) devote all or most of their practice to the diagnosis and treatment of fertility problems. Reproductive Endocrinologists must first complete a four year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology followed by a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

A busy general practitioner does not have the time to devote solely to infertility. Fertility specialists such as Dr.Goldstein devote the time necessary to stay abreast of the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. Dr. Goldstein is able to attend scientific meetings where he can interact and exchange knowledge with other infertility specialists. This means that the treatment options available at a facility such as Fertility Specialists of Texas are the latest and most advanced in North Texas and in the United States. There has been an explosion of knowledge over the last ten years, and physicians must work constantly to stay abreast of the latest treatment developments.

Advanced Training Matters

Dr.Goldstein is board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. In addition, he is one of few reproductive endocrinologists who has spent an additional year training in advanced reproductive surgery. In addition, Dr.Goldstein was previously an Assistant Professor in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Washington University in St. Louis, a medical school that consistently ranks in the top 10 in the nation. Dr. Goldstein is frequently asked to comment on questions regarding fertility, both locally and nationally and serves as an expert regarding complex fertility treatments such as IVF.

When do I need to see a specialist?

There are a variety of causes of infertility affecting couples and a frequent question is always when is the time to see an infertility specialist. If you have undergone a basic workup and/or a few treatment cycles with your gynecologist and have not conceived, then it may be time to consider consulting a reproductive endocrinologist. If you are exploring reproductive care options, the team at Fertility Specialists of Texas is there for you each step of the way.
