Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for Dallas, Frisco, Plano, and Other Areas
Through preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) at our fertility clinics serving those from Dallas, Frisco, Plano, and other areas through the state and the nation, the likelihood that a genetic condition will be passed on to a child is reduced. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, also known as embryo screening, uses in vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques to retrieve unfertilized eggs (oocytes), which are then fertilized for genetic analysis. At Fertility Specialists of Texas, Dr. Jerald Goldstein and our staff are proud to provide this important prenatal diagnostic procedure.
About Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
When a couple has a genetic defect in their family history, they may seek preimplantation genetic diagnosis in order to increase the chance of having a healthy baby. After eggs are recovered from the ovary as part of the IVF process, they are fertilized to form embryos. A biopsy is then performed to remove tissue from the embryos. This tissue is then examined and compared to the DNA codes of diseases that PGD can screen for. Those embryos that show normal biopsy results can then be selected for transfer into the uterus. At our Dallas and Frisco clinics serving those from Fort Worth, Plano, and other areas, preimplantation genetic diagnosis can also be combined with cryopreservation fertility treatment techniques. Through cryopreservation, unused embryos with normal biopsy results can be safely stored for future use.
Through state-of-the-art PGD techniques are our Dallas and Frisco fertility clinics, Dr. Goldstein and our staff are able to screen for a wide variety of diseases. Cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, Huntington's disease, and other genetic conditions can have a significant impact on a child's quality of life. When a genetic disease is part of a family's history, or a couple has a history of miscarriages, preimplantation genetic diagnosis offers new hope.
Limitations of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
It should be noted that there are limitations associated with preimplantation genetic diagnosis testing. Not all genetic diseases can be screened for, and the absence of a genetic condition cannot be determined with 100 percent certainty. During your consultation, Dr. Goldstein and our staff will help you fully understand all aspects of PGD treatment.
